Everyone knows the feeling of looking at the clock knowing how much time you have left in the day, thinking “I know there’s work I need to do, but I’ll get it done in an hour.”

Then an hour passes by, “I’ll do it at this time,” but then that time also passes. The whole time we are dreading actually doing the work. We all know that not doing it is bad for us but we just can’t bring ourselves to do it.

Why?

The Root Cause Of Anxiety

Anxiety is when you feel a lot of psychological tension thinking about future events. Your mind is refusing to face whatever obligation or consequence that will be forced upon you.

Even thinking about doing work or studying creates stress in your psyche.

The best antidote to anxiety, in my opinion, is having an optimistic attitude. It sounds corny, but if you keep repeating lines in your head about how you don’t want to work, or studying is boring then you are most than likely not going to do it.

This will create tension because you also know that not doing what you need to do will set you back or risk your future. So instead of seeing boring work or studying as tedious means to an end, see them as building blocks for your future.

These small steps are not only required for success but they should be appreciated as well because they are what your success is.

Success is a habit, not a monetary value or a standard of living, and if your habit consists of consistent studying or work then there is no way you cannot be a success.

If you chose to be the kind of person who does exactly what they need to do when they know they need to get it done, you will start noticing that your anxieties and worries about the future evaporate away.

You’ll either be too busy, or your work ethic will make you too positive/confident of a person to worry about a future where you are not successful.

Is There Any Reason Why This Advice Wouldn’t Work?

Yes, one of the ways this advice could fail is if you are not doing what will accomplish the life goal you’ve set for yourself.

If your dream is to be an actor, then don’t waste your effort on being a barista, unless that job is in some way supporting your pursuit of becoming an actor.

A lot of people are in jobs “because it pays the bills,” but that’s not good enough, why are you not working on seeking meaning in your life?

If you were to pursue your dreams, you’d notice that suddenly you have a lot of energy to keep working and keep pressing forward because you know that this is what your life was meant for.

If you are doing a job just to pay the bills, you know deep down that your life wasn’t meant to just be doing mundane tasks until you retire. This is how people become depressed, and bitter about life.

I recognize that bills are things that are necessary for living in a society but I ask you what is the point of living if it isn’t to do something great with your life?

You could say raising a family and I’d agree but again, if you aren’t fulfilled with the work in your life, the depression and negativity that creates spills over into all aspects of your life.

A lot of people are self-medicating this unhappiness about their lives with drugs and alcohol, but this just makes the problem worse. This can create a bad habit that robs you or your money and finances then eventually all your friends and family.

There Is Only One Choice To Make

Do you choose to be a cog in some corporate machine that uses your time and energy to fulfil it’s own goals or do you take a risk and work on your life’s purpose?

If you make the first choice enjoy the ever-present feeling that something isn’t right or that something is missing in your life.

If you chose to take your destiny into your own hands, soon you will feel excited about life again, you’ll feel as happy as a kid knowing anything can happen.

I just want to say as an aside, I’m not asking you to quit your job especially if you have financial obligations. I’m saying look at your job as something that is supporting you until you can leave it behind because your life’s pursuit can support you now.

In Conclusion

Working or studying can be seen as meaningless busywork that pays meaningless bills in a meaningless life or steps toward something good in your future, your attitude about it affects your motivation to work and willpower required to get it done.

The habit of working becomes your normal mode of life within a few weeks of repeated consistent action. After that, little to no motivation is required to do the work. It’s just second nature like brushing your teeth or taking a bath.
